Robust switching regulators increase flexibility, reduce external components
The NCP3064 switching regulator from
ON Semiconductor operates at
150kHz to enable a smaller
output capacitor and inductor,
and also accepts inputs up to
40V to address a wide range
of applications.
Several integrated features
identify the NCP3064 as a
convenient and robust
regulator for demanding
applications. These
include an internal
temperaturecompensated
reference, a comparator, a
controlled-duty-cycle oscillator with
active current-limit circuit, an integrated
driver and a high-current output switch.
In addition, an internal thermal shutdown with
hysteresis prevents catastrophic failures in the
event of accidental device overheating.
The NCP3064 is optimised for use in step-down,
step-up and voltage-inverting applications
with a minimum number of external
components. A gated oscillator is
implemented on-chip to regulate
the output voltage, which
eliminates the need
for dominantpole
loop
compensation
to maintain
converter stability.
There is also an
On/Off feature that puts
the device into a low-power
standby state. This
reduces current draw to
below 100µA to help designers
meet energy-saving initiatives
such as the EU Energy-using
Products (EuP) directive.
