32-bit ColdFire® MCU offers cost-effective connectivity

As well as cost-saving functionality, the MCF5225x range integrates connectivity options supporting the main industrial protocols. These include a 10/100BaseT Ethernet controller and a USB On-the-Go controller, with an optional FlexCAN controller.

To support stringent industrial requirements, the MCF5225x integrates numerous features such as an independently-clocked real-time clock, a low-voltage detector module and a second watchdog controller with independent clock source.

For secure communications there is an optional hardware cryptography accelerator and random number generator.

To help reduce overall design costs, Freescale is bundling the MCF5225x with the MQX Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) free of charge. In addition, Freescale and their 3rd-party developers will make available a range of reference designs and examples. Due to the layout of the pins in the LQFP packages, designers can also implement Ethernet using a low-cost 2-layer PCB solution. The 2-layer Ethernet-enabled PCB can save substantial bill-of-materials cost compared to the more complex 4- or 6-layer solutions that are normally required.

As well as enhanced connectivity, these MCUs feature a wide range of integrated control functionality, a selection of timers, a dedicated PWM timer and a variety of serial communications controllers to connect to onboard functions and to external modules and peripherals. The MCF5225x has up to 512kbyte Flash memory, 64K SRAM and an external bus interface to connect to external memories and peripherals up to a maximum width of 16 bits.
