Small-footprint buck regulator relaxes input and output requirements

The Exar PowerBlox™ SP7656 is a non-synchronous buck regulator offering high flexibility through its wide input-voltage range, low output-voltage capability, high output accuracy and standard SO-8 footprint.

To achieve these goals the regulator is optimised to convert at low duty cycle from a wide range of input voltages. Size reduction is achieved by more efficient packaging, integration of loop-compensation components, and by using 600kHz switching frequency whereas most alternatives currently use 300kHz. The regulator also achieves 87% efficiency.

The wide input range of 4.5V to 29V and minimum output voltage of 0.6V make the SP7656 suitable as either a 5V, 12V or 24V intermediate-supply generator or as a low-voltage point-of-load power supply.

The SP7656 provides features such as adjustable over-current protection, adjustable soft start, UVLO, and 1% set-point accuracy. Input feed-forward control provides excellent transient response while exceptional regulation accuracy is achieved through a 1%-accurate reference. Ideal uses are in systems taking power from loosely-regulated secondaries of isolated supplies, or from intermediate bus voltages.
