Buck Regulators Deliver Up to 12A for Best-in-Class Power Density
The SP7662 synchronous buck
regulator, from Exar, delivers 12A at
over 93% conversion efficiency
within less than 7cm2 of board space,
resulting in the highest power
density in its class.
Two further devices, the 3A SP7661 and 6A
SP7663, are also available as part of Exar’s
PowerBlox™ regulator family, and share a
common architecture allowing engineers to
meet varying load requirements. All devices
are packaged in a thermally-enhanced DFN
package and feature single-supply operation
with a wide input-voltage range of 4.5V to
22V. Compatibility with type-II or type-III
compensation allows designers more
freedom when selecting the output
capacitor.
All three devices have an internal
regulator, which allows use with a loosely regulated
input from a supply such as a
rectified AC transformer or Intermediate Bus
Converter (IBC). With an accurate ±0.8V
reference and features enabling various
sequencing configurations, the SP7661,
SP7662 and SP7663 can also be used to
power a variety of digital processors. Fault
protection includes output under-voltage
protection and output over-current
protection, as well as hiccup mode to avoid
overheating.
