UART Enhancements Simplify Software and Hardware Design
EXAR has developed a Universal
Asynchronous Receiver and
Transmitter (UART) that integrates
enhanced features to simplify the
design of hardware and software
used in industrial networks.
These features include automatic RTS/CTS or
DTR/DSR hardware flow control with
programmable hysteresis, automatic software
flow control and RS-485 half-duplex direction
control with programmable turn-around delay.
The XR16V798 and XR16M698 are octal
UARTs supporting data rates up to 16Mb/s, to
service the high-bandwidth requirements of
industrial systems. The global interrupt-source
register provides a complete interrupt-status
indication for all eight channels to speed up
interrupt parsing.
Each UART has its own 16C550-compatible set
of configuration registers, up to 64-byte
transmit and receive FIFOs, fully-programmable
transmit and receive FIFO trigger levels, and
transmit and receive FIFO-level counters.
