DC/DC Regulator Makes Efficient Use of PCB Space and Power
TinyBuck™ DC/DC regulators, from
Fairchild Semiconductor®, enable
power designers to achieve higher
output current and efficiency using
less PCB space.
The FAN2108 is an 8A, fully-integrated,
synchronous buck converter that drives
efficiency over a wide input-voltage
range from 3V to 24V. Other
solutions achieve efficiency by using
additional discrete components,
lengthening design time and
increasing the size of the end
application. The FAN2108, however,
integrates the controller, MOSFETs,
and boot diode into a 5mm x 6mm
MLP package.
Designed with Fairchild’s
PowerTrench® MOSFET process with
a low Figure Of Merit (FOM), the
FAN2108 reduces both conduction
and switching losses. For example, at
12V input voltage and 8A load
current, the FAN2108 delivers 92%
efficiency with a 3.3V output or 87%
efficiency with a 1.8V output.
At 5V input voltage and 3.3V output, this
device achieves a peak efficiency of 95%.
Additionally, the FAN2108 offers multiple
protection features that deal with over-voltage,
over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature
situations. The DC/DC regulator
features pre-bias start-up and ensures that
the output is not discharged during the soft-start
cycle, protecting system ICs from
damage. The extended device family
includes a 3A version (FAN2103) and a 6A
version (FAN2106).
