New SMPS Controller Supports 250W LED Systems
NXP has introduced an integrated SMPS
controller IC that allows the design of
reliable, high-power LED drivers using
very few external components.
The SSL1750 supports LED drivers with power
ratings ranging from 25W up to 250W. Features
offered by the device include a controller for
Power Factor Correction (PFC) and a flyback
controller. The IC also provides a large number
of protection functions, including under- and
over-voltage protection.
The device integrates a number of features
that provide high efficiency at all power levels.
This applies to quasiresonant
operation at
high power levels,
quasi-resonant
operation with valley
skipping and reduced-frequency
operation at
lower power levels.
At low power levels, the
PFC switches over to
burst-mode control to
maintain high
efficiency. In burst
mode, soft-start and
soft-stop functions are
added to eliminate
audible noise.
During low-power conditions, the flyback
controller switches to frequency-reduction mode
and limits the peak current to 25% of its maximum
value. This ensures high efficiency at low power
while minimising audible noise from the
transformer.
FEATURES
