Streamline switched-reluctance design with new Smart Power Modules

Power Modules (SPM®) from Fairchild
Semiconductor® are the first modules
to solve the entire power-circuit
requirements for Switched-
Reluctance Motors (SRM).
Fairchild’s FCAS50SN60 SRM SPM integrates the
high-voltage IC (HVIC), low-voltage IC (LVIC),
high-side and low-side IGBTs, and fast recovery
diodes to simplify integration, save up to 40% of
board space, increase reliability and reduce
manufacturing costs. With drive levels prematched
to the low-loss IGBTs, as well as
optimised circuit protection features, the
FCAS50SN60 eliminates key design challenges
associated with discrete SRM drivers. Voltage and
current ratings of 600V and 50A assure high
power-handling capability, as well as rugged and
durable performance.
The integrated HVIC provides several
advantages for designers, including eliminating
the need for optocouplers in the IGBT gate
circuits to minimise the footprint of the
FCAS50SN60. It also allows a single-supply drive
topology for the device, eliminating the
requirement for negative bias.
Integrated protection features of the
FCAS50SN60 further enhance system reliability,
including under-voltage lock-out and shortcircuit
protection. The module also contains a
thermistor to enable over-temperature shutdown
without requiring any external components.
As a smart module for motors rated up to
2kW, the FCAS50SN60 also benefits from
thermally-efficient package construction
including Direct-Bonded Copper (DBC)
technology to minimise the thermal
resistance to ambient levels. This delivers
benefits including lower die temperature for
higher reliability, as well as easier thermal
management to save design complexity and
reduce materials costs. DBC construction also
helps to ensure a very low leakage current
for high operating efficiency.
The FCAS50SN60 is available in a Mini-DIP
package measuring 44mm x 26.8mm that
satisfies basic creepage- and clearancespacing
requirements.
