8- and 32-bit compatible microcontrollers add USB functionality
The Flexis™ series provides compatibility
between 8- and 32-bit microcontrollers,
enabling designers to offer multiple
performance levels of their products
using a single hardware and board design.
The JM family of Flexis microcontrollers
adds flexible USB options to this format.
The 8-bit MC9S08JM features a full-speed
USB device, providing a quick and easy way
to standardise serial communications in
industrial and consumer applications. The 32-
bit JM128 microcontroller features USB On-The-
Go (OTG), enabling USB host or USB device
operation. All JM devices feature an integrated
transceiver saving cost, time and board space
by eliminating additional components.
The advanced feature set includes a rich suite
of communications peripherals, a 12-bit ADC,
analogue comparator, two independent timer
modules, and a real-time clock. In addition to
this base feature set, the 32-bit MCF51JM128
offers a cryptographic acceleration unit, and a
CAN module, both of which are increasingly
utilised in a variety of industrial applications.
The background debugging system and
on-chip In-Circuit Emulation (ICE), with realtime
bus capture capability, provides a singlewire
debugging and emulation interface that
eliminates the need for expensive emulation
tools.
Freescale also offers a stand-alone,
complimentary, easy-to-use USB stack that
enables developers to get running in minutes.

ecosystem of reference designs, application
notes, software examples and web casts.
