Peripherals maximise 8-bit motor-control credentials
The Z8FMC16100 MCU introduced by
Zilog supports high-performance
Brushless DC (BLDC) motor control
at a competitive price by providing
integrated peripherals such as an
optimised PWM module, 2.5µs A/D
converter with time-stamp capability,
an integrated operational amplifier
for current sampling, and multiple
communication engines.
The 8-bit device is optimised for control of
single- and multi-phase variable-speed motors.
The PWM module can be configured as three
complementary pairs or six independent PWM
outputs supporting dead-band operation. There is
also a trip input for fault protection. These features
enable multi-phase control capability for a variety
of motor types. Pulse-by-pulse control or latched
fast-shutdown of the PWM pins during a fault
condition ensures safe operation of the motor.
There is also a fast A/D converter with an
integrated sample-and-hold circuit, which
provides up to eight single-ended channels
of 10-bits resolution for voltage, current, and
back-EMF sensing. The Z8FMC16100’s
integrated current-sensing operational amplifier
combines with an on-chip comparator to
support over-current limiting or shutdown. A
Hall-effect sensor interface can be
implemented using the 16-bit timer also
available on-chip. This timer also has
capture/compare PWM capability. A full-duplex
9-bit UART supports asynchronous serial
communications including the Local
Interconnect Network (LIN) protocol for data
rates up to 20kbit/s.
