DSCs extend processing and peripheral capabilities

Freescale has introduced the 56F8025 Digital Signal Controller (DSC), combining high-performance DSP and control-processing capabilities with extensive programmable peripherals to increase integration and streamline hardware and software development.

The processing engine delivers accelerated performance in both control and DSP domains. The 16-bit core achieves 32MIPS at 32MHz and features a dual Harvard architecture, which permits three simultaneous accesses to programme and data memory. High DSP performance is assured through provision of four 36-bit accumulators, a 16 x 16-bit parallel MAC, and a parallel instruction set with unique DSP addressing modes.

The peripheral set supports control, sensing, management and monitoring duties in numerous industrial, medical, commercial and buildingservices applications. The multi-function, 15-bit PWM module has six outputs, operates at up to 96MHz and supports centre- and edge-aligned PWM modes. Two independent 12-bit ADCs sustain 2.67Msample/s and allow conversions to be synchronised through the PWM or timer modules.

In addition, there is a Queued Serial Peripheral Interface (QSPI) supporting full-duplex operation, four-word deep FIFOs and programmable-length transactions. Other peripherals include a Queued Serial Communication Interface (QSCI) with LINslave functionality, two 12-bit DACs and three 16-bit programmable interval timers. There are also two analogue comparators with selectable input source and outputs capable of driving the timer input, PWM fault input, PWM source or an external pin, and also capable of triggering ADC conversions.

Each peripheral can be independently shut down to save power, and any pin can also be used as a General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO).
