Magnetic-encoder IC detects rotation or tilt, with pushbutton capability
|
|
A 12-bit magnetic-encoder, introduced by austriamicrosystems, is capable of sensing rotational position or angular tilt, as well as supporting pushbutton operation, allowing designers to reduce the size and increase the functionality of devices such as joysticks and navigational knobs. |
The AS5046 is a complete system-on-chip
including Hall sensors, front-end amplifiers, ADCs
and signal processing. When used with an axiallypolarised
magnet, the AS5046 detects the angle of
tilt, which enables compact joystick controls for a
variety of industrial and professional instruments.
Using the AS5046 with a diametrically-polarised
magnet enables accurate angular-position
sensing up to 360°. The distance of the magnet
from the sensor is also detected, which allows
implementation of pushbutton functions.
A programmable ratiometric analogue
output is provided, as well as an I2C
interface, allowing standalone connection
or integration with a host microcontroller.
Further on-chip features include an
internal 3.3V LDO voltage regulator, enabling
direct operation from a 3.3V or 5.0V supply.
In addition, integrated conditioning circuitry
for the Hall sensors allows the device to
tolerate magnet misalignment and external
magnetic fields.
